Today we continue with NFD’s alarm assignments starting with a Second Alarm. When a second alarm is struck, all available off-duty NFD personnel are recalled to the station. In additional to NFD personnel, two additional engines and 2 additional ladders are called from surrounding towns. Not all of the resources will go directly to the incident scene, however. Some will stage at NFD stations to cover the rest of the city and be available should they be needed at the fire scene. The resources of a Second Alarm are in addition to the resources requested from the Box Alarm.
A Third Alarm will bring an additional 3 engines from surrounding communities and the county air truck. The county air truck is utilized to refill the air bottles that firefighters use to breath when there is smoke or other contaminants in the air.
The communities that respond mutual aid can vary depending on the area of Northampton that the incident occurs as well as what towns happen to be available at the time. Stay tuned for the rest of NFD’s alarm assignments still to come in the next few days!
