Drinking Water Week, May 5 to May 11, 2019
FRIDAY: We all need clean water!
There are many things you can do to help protect drinking water supplies, including:
- Clean up pet waste (A dog can produce 3/4 lb of waste per day, which contains over 7 billion fecal coliform bacteria. Domestic pets can also carry Giardia, Cryptosporidium and other harmful bacteria).
- Fertilizers add nitrogen and phosphorus to water supplies, which in turn promote algae growth. Use limited quantities when needed and avoid application before a rainstorm.
- Keep our forests healthy! Help prevent the spread of invasive plants such as bittersweet and barberry, and refrain from transporting firewood (and potential pests) from other parts of the region.
