[ARCHIVED] May 20: Hazardous Household Waste Collection

Northampton’s annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event will be held on the morning of Saturday, May 20 at Smith Vocational High School, 80 Locust Street.    During this event, pre-registered Northampton, Florence, and Leeds residents may bring hazardous household waste free of charge for safe disposal via a licensed hazardous materials handler.  Participants must register by May 16 and will be assigned a half-hour appointment window within which to deliver their material.

A wide range of unwanted household products with labels indicating the need for special handling or disposal will be accepted.  This includes household, garden and auto-related items with the phrase “keep out of reach of children” on the label, or warnings that contents are caustic, toxic, corrosive, poison, flammable or dangerous.  Rechargeable, button-like and other non-alkaline batteries, fluorescent bulbs, and mercury-bearing thermostats and thermometers will also be collected.  For more information visit www.northamptonma.gov/reduce-waste.

Residents must pre-register for the event by Noon on Tuesday, May 16 by calling 413-587-1570, ext 4306.  Detailed participation information will be sent to registered participants.  Non-residents, businesses and institutions may participate in this collection for a fee by contacting Susan Waite at the Department of Public Works at 413-587-1059 or via email (swaite@northamptonma.gov).
