[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of December 25th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Adare Place, Bridge Street, Heffernan Street, Middle Street, Orchard Street, Sheffield Lane, Stilson Avenue and West Center Street
    • Removed, repaired and/or replaced signs on Federal Street, Franklin Street, Meadow Street, Olander Drive and West Street
    • Responded to significant rain event and subsequent flooding events
      • Closed streets along the Mill River including Florence Road, Main Street (Leeds), Meadow Street, Pine Street, Reservoir Road, Spring Street and West Street
      • Deployed stop log structure at the Mill River floodwall on West Street
      • Closed streets along Connecticut River, Oxbow and Mill River Diversion including Old Springfield Road and Pynchon Meadow Road; MassDOT closed Mount Tom Road
  • Lovefield Street remains closed
  • Annual ward street sweeping operations:
    • Continue in Ward 1
    • Complete in Wards 2, 3, 4 and 5
    • Wards will be swept in the following order this year: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 7, 6
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed
  • To report an issue with a traffic sign, please submit a request via the Traffic Sign Issue Form

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to construct drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River; work also includes roadway drainage improvements
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Snow storage should be avoided at the dead end so as not to compromise slope integrity
  • Public Works will be on-site continuing post-construction observations throughout the winter

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • The Contractor will not be working on Monday, December 25th
  • I-91 southbound:
    • Daytime right lane closure Tuesday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for site access
  • I-91 northbound:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • Route 5:
    • Daytime shoulder closures Tuesday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., for concrete and slope work; motorist should be alert and use caution as trucks will be entering and exiting the work zone; police details will assist with traffic control
  • Hockanum Road:
    •  Daytime road closure on Thursday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; a detour (pdf) will be in place

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes and inspection of the toe drains running parallel to the levees via CCTV
  • The Contractor will make a pipe repair to a section of toe drain at the end of Henry Street in the coming weeks

Linden Street Sewer Manhole Installation

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to install a sewer manhole on Linden Street in the vicinity of 2 Linden Street
  • The Contractor has installed the new sewer manhole and a temporary pavement patch
  • Work is substantially complete

Maplewood Terrace Sewer Manhole Installation

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to install a sewer manhole on Maplewood Terrace in the vicinity of 120 Maplewood Terrace
  • The Contractor has installed the new sewer manhole and a temporary pavement patch
  • Work is substantially complete

State Street Sewer Service Repair

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to repair two sewer services and a sinkhole in the vicinity of 245 State Street
  • The Contractor will also install a temporary pavement patch
  • Work is substantially complete

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Public Works and/or the Contractor will be on-site continuing post-construction inspections throughout the Fall
