[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of November 6th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Burts Pit Road, Randolph Place and Westwood Terrace
    • Provided barricades for the Rag Shag Parade
    • Made and stockpiled asphalt ingots for winter repairs
    • Continued preparing for winter operations
  • Lovefield Street remains closed
  • Annual ward street sweeping operations:
    • Continue in Ward 1
    • Complete in Wards 2, 3, 4 and 5
    • Wards will be swept in the following order this year: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 7, 6
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed
  • To report an issue with a traffic sign, please submit a request via the Traffic Sign Issue Form

Bridge Street School Safe Routes to School

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gomes Construction Company, Inc. to complete improvements that will enhance pedestrian safety near Bridge Street School
  • The project will upgrade sidewalks, curbing and accessible ramps on Parsons Street and portions of Hawley Street; upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street near Parsons Street including RRFBs; and reconstruct the intersection of Pomeroy Terrace with Bridge Street to install a raised crosswalk and to improve drainage
  • The project is substantially complete
  • The Contractor may install signs this week
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #609915

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with Bridge Road, King Street and North King Street
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by July 2024
  • The Contractor will be installing granite curb between the railroad crossing and Damon Place and paving the final top course on driveways between Damon Place and the Norwottuck Rail Trail this week
  • One-way alternating traffic will be maintained at all times with police/flagger details assisting with traffic control; motorists should expect delays

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to construct drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River; work also includes roadway drainage improvements
  • The Contractor will be installing final pavement this week
  • The path along the Mill River is open
  • The path from Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River remains closed until further notice

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • I-91 southbound:
    • Daytime right lane closure Monday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for site access
  • I-91 northbound:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • Route 5:
    • Daytime shoulder closures Monday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., for concrete and slope work
    • Motorist should be alert and use caution as trucks will be entering and exiting the work zone; police details will assist with traffic control
  • Hockanum Road:
    • Daytime road closure Monday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for abutment construction; a detour (pdf) will be in place

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2023
  • The switch-over to the new system and pressures will occur in the coming weeks

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes and inspection of the toe drains running parallel to the levees via CCTV
  • Manhole installations and pipe inspections via CCTV are complete
  • The Contractor will make a pipe repair to a section of toe drain adjacent to Venturers Field Road in the coming weeks

Levee Vegetation Management

  • The City has contracted with Cain’s Mechanical LLC for vegetation management at various locations throughout the levee and flood control system on both the Connecticut and Mill Rivers
  • Work to mechanically remove unwanted woody growth and fallen trees and localized placement of rip rap for slope stabilization will be undertaken periodically system wide throughout the growing season
  • The Contractor has completed work for the season and has demobilized until Spring 2024

Locust Street & SVAHS Drainage Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Clayton D. Davenport Trucking, Inc. to construct a new outfall at Smith Voc to relieve capacity constraints in the Locust Street drainage system; work also includes the replacement of a failed drain manhole in Locust Street
  • The project is substantially complete

Old Springfield Road Bridge Replacement

  • MassDOT is proposing to replace the Old Springfield Road over the Mill River Bridge (a.k.a. the Oxbow Bridge)
  • The original concrete bridge was built in 1939 and is structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. In 1991, a steel bridge was placed on top of the original concrete structure, but the bridge still floods during the winter months. A new bridge is needed to improve roadway geometry and to improve function for all roadway users.
  • A 25% virtual design public hearing (VDPH) was held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. The following links provide more information on the project:

Pavement Markings

  • The City has contracted with Markings, Inc. to repaint pavement markings across the City including double yellow center lines, white edge lines and lane lines, speed hump markings, arrows, railroad markings and crosswalks
  • The Contractor will be painting overnight this week, beginning at 9:00 p.m.

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Public Works and/or the Contractor will be on-site continuing post-construction inspections throughout the Fall
