[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of August 14th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Old Springfield Road
    • Installed, repaired and/or replaced signs on Bridge Road, Burts Pit Road, Cooke Avenue, Fifth Avenue, Fourth Avenue, Langworthy Road, Laurel Street, Locust Street, Massasoit Avenue, Northern Avenue and Prince Street
    • Patched trench cuts at JFK Middle School parking lot
    • Opened bridge on Old Springfield Road
    • Swept Crescent Street
  • Annual ward street sweeping operations:
    • Continue in Ward 4 this week
    • Complete in Ward 5
    • Wards will be swept in the following order this year: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 7, 6
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed

Bridge Street School Safe Routes to School

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gomes Construction Company, Inc. to complete improvements that will enhance pedestrian safety near Bridge Street School
  • The project will upgrade sidewalks, curbing and accessible ramps on Parsons Street and portions of Hawley Street; upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street near Parsons Street including RRFBs; and reconstruct the intersection of Pomeroy Terrace with Bridge Street to install a raised crosswalk and to improve drainage
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #609915

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with Bridge Road, King Street and North King Street
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023
  • The Contractor will be raising catch basin frames on Damon Road from the Norwottuck Rail Trail to Damon Place this week; one-way alternating traffic will be maintained at all times with police/flagger details assisting with traffic control; motorists should expect delays

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to construct drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River; work also includes roadway drainage improvements in the vicinity of 49, 50, 55, 57 & 59 Dryads Green
  • Construction is anticipated to begin in August and continue through the summer
  • Tree removal is scheduled for the week of August 21st
  • The path from Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River remains closed until further notice; construction will also temporarily close the walking path along the Mill River

Hooker Avenue Drainage Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to install a catch basin, a manhole and granite curbing in the vicinity of 23 Hooker Avenue
  • The catch basin, drain manhole, granite curbing and binder course have been installed
  • The Contractor may install final paving patch this week

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • I-91 southbound:
    • Daytime right lane closure this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for demolition debris removal
  • I-91 northbound:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • Route 5:
    • Daytime shoulder closure, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., for demolition debris removal; motorist should be alert and use caution as trucks will be entering and exiting the work zone; police details will assist with traffic control
  • Hockanum Road:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2023
  • Work is anticipated to resume in a few weeks

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes and inspection of the toe drains running parallel to the levees via CCTV
  • Manhole installations and pipe inspections via CCTV are complete
  • Pipe repair adjacent to Venturers Field Road schedule for Summer 2023 TBD

Levee Vegetation Management

  • The City has contracted with Cain’s Mechanical LLC for vegetation management at various locations throughout the levee and flood control system on both the Connecticut and Mill Rivers
  • Work to mechanically remove unwanted woody growth and fallen trees and localized placement of rip rap for slope stabilization will be undertaken periodically system wide throughout the growing season
  • The Contractor has demobilized for the season and will resume work in September

Locust Street & SVAHS Drainage Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Clayton D. Davenport Trucking, Inc. to construct a new outfall at Smith Voc to relieve capacity constraints in the Locust Street drainage system; work also includes the replacement of a failed drain manhole in Locust Street
  • The work was substantially complete, but due to heavy rains, some additional work is required to repair slope below the outfall
  • The Contractor has demobilized and will return in a few weeks to make repairs and complete site cleanup

Milton Street Sewer Repair

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to replace a sewer manhole in the vicinity of 60 Milton Street
  • Milton Street will be closed to through traffic from Federal Street to Ormond Drive on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week; a detour will be in place via Riverside Drive; police/flagger details will assist with traffic control traffic

Mount Tom Road (Route 5)

  • The City has contracted with Tighe & Bond for improvements to the Connecticut River Levee System including the Hockanum Road pump station
  • The project is substantially complete
  • The Contractor will be evaluating flood control operations at the flood wall on Mount Tom Road (Route 5) this week
    • A nighttime lane closure will be required on Thursday, August 17, from 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.; police details will assist with traffic control

Williams Street Sewer Repair

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to repair a sewer main in the vicinity of 107 Williams Street
  • The project will require a temporary road closure
  • Construction is anticipated to begin in August, dates TBD

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • Construction is scheduled to be complete by Fall 2023
  • Final paving of the roadway, driveways and sidewalks is anticipated to begin in a few weeks
