[ARCHIVED] Virtual Design Public Hearing for Improvements on Main Street

Virtual Design Public Hearing

Northampton – Complete Streets Improvements on Main Street (Route 9)

What is happening?

MassDOT is hosting a live virtual design public hearing to discuss the proposed Complete Streets Corridor and Intersection Improvements project on Main Street (Route 9) in downtown Northampton, MA. MassDOT welcomes your input for consideration in the design process.

How will this affect you?

The project proposes to reconstruct the layout of Main Street in Downtown Northampton to meet the MassDOT Complete Streets transportation design policy and provide a safer functioning downtown with improved accessibility for all users. The project begins west of the intersection of Elm and West Streets and extends approximately 0.4 miles east to the intersection of Market and Hawley Streets. The proposed design provides one travel lane in each direction with a center running flush median that will afford space for turning vehicles at key locations. Separated bike lanes are proposed on both sides of the roadway for the entire project, including as part of the proposed widened sidewalk facilities.  Enhanced lighting, streetscape amenities, tree plantings, bus stop accommodations, reconfigured parking and dedicated space for loading/deliveries are part of the proposed design that will be presented.
