[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of December 6th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Grant Avenue, Industrial Drive, Ladd Avenue, Lincoln Avenue, Old Wilson Road and Riverside Drive
    • Installed and/or replaced signs on Riverbank Road and Riverside Drive
    • Swept Clement Street, King Street, North Main Street and Summer Street
    • Prepared DPW yard for winter season and snow events
  • Street sweeping - ALL wards have been swept this year; maintenance sweeping will continue in select locations (see bullet above)
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed

Bridge Street, Damon Road, Interstate 91 - Exit 25 (old Exit 19)

  • MassDOT has contracted with Baltazar Contractors, Inc. to construct a roundabout and associated improvements to the Interstate 91 - Exit 25 (old Exit 19) interchange at the base of the Coolidge Bridge
  • Minor work on the traffic signal camera has yet to be completed
  • Lighting installation is scheduled to occur no sooner than January 2022
  • Alternating lane closures may be in place to facilitate work
  • Officers will assist with traffic control as needed

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with King Street, North King Street and Bridge Road
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2023
  • Utility relocation, drainage improvements and water & sewer replacement will occur in 2021 prior to full depth roadway reconstruction in 2022
  • Gagliarducci will be working on roadway drainage on King Street near the intersection with Damon Road and Bridge Road; water main installation will continue easterly from approximately #230 to #244 Damon Road
  • Travel will be restricted to a single lane at active work areas; officers will assist with traffic control
  • Motorists should expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes

Dryads Green Extension

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises, Inc. to perform emergency work to stabilize the slope southwest of Dryads Green Extension in order to protect a nearby sewer system
  • The Contractor has removed deadwood, installed crushed stone & riprap and made limited drain pipe repairs; the work area has been seeded & mulched and additional sediment controls have been installed
  • The DPW will periodically inspect this area throughout the winter & the spring to confirm site stability
  • The path from Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River is closed until further notice

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • Work in the I-91 median is underway to accommodate a temporary bridge that will be utilized to maintain 2-lane traffic in both directions while each set of northbound and southbound bridges are replaced in sequence
  • The southbound high speed lane will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for median construction and sheet pile installation at Hockanum Road bridge
  • Utility construction, drainage installation and trench patching will occur on Route 5 between Atwood Drive and the I-91 southbound on ramp; lane shifts will be in place, but 2-way traffic will be maintained

King Street Corridor Improvements

  • MassDOT has contracted with Morais Concrete Service, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to King Street between Bright Street and Church Street
  • The project will provide lane reconfiguration, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, landscaping and drainage improvements and new traffic signals at North & Summer Streets and Finn Street at both King and State Streets
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by Fall 2022
  • Morais will be installing pavers between Bright Street and Finn Street
  • Travel will be restricted to a single lane between Bright Street and Summer Street with two lanes open when possible; officers will assist with traffic control
  • Motorists should expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s, water main interconnections to the transmission main at Leonard Street and East Center Street and the installation of two hydrants connected to the transmission main in River Road
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The project is scheduled to be completed Spring 2022
  • The Contractor will not be working on site this week

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes; once manhole installation is complete, the toe drains that runs parallel to the earthen dike will be inspected via CCTV
  • The project will continue through December 20th, and then the contractor will demobilize for the winter and work will resume Spring 2022

Paving Contract 2021

  • The City has contracted with Warner Brothers, LLC for roadway improvements on Hayes Avenue, Loudville Road, Meadow Street, Pine Street (Maple Street to South Main Street) and Warfield Place
  • Improvements include pavement reclamation, drainage work, sidewalk & ADA upgrades and pavement markings
  • Work also includes intersection reconfiguration at Pine Street with Maple Street and Mann Terrace and bridge rehabilitation on Meadow Street over the Mill River
  • The Meadow Street bridge has been reopened to all modes of transportation; a short-term closure to install joint seals is anticipated Spring 2022
  • Roadway paving is complete
  • This week, work will include the installation of fencing at the Meadow Street parking areas and temporary tape markings for all crosswalks and stop bars within the project areas
  • The project will continue through mid-December, and then the contractor will demobilize for the winter and work will resume Spring 2022
  • Guardrails, driveway repairs, sidewalk repairs, permanent pavement marking and other miscellaneous work will be completed Spring 2022

Pavement Markings

  • The City has contracted with K5 Corporation for repainting all crosswalks within the City
  • Two crews will be painting overnight from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., weather permitting

Roundhouse Parking Lot

  • The City has contracted with Mass-West Construction for rehabilitation and expansion of the Roundhouse Parking Lot
  • The project consists of repaving, restriping, addition of 22 spaces, expansion to the south with a realignment of the rail trail, drainage and lighting improvements, and landscaping in new dividing islands
  • Work is complete with the exception of the installation of back-ordered light poles and fixtures that will be installed at a date to be determined
  • The lot and bike path have been reopened for use
  • Questions about the project should be directed to the Central Services Department

West Street Bridge

  • The City has contracted with Cotton Tree Service to remove various tree parts contributing to a logjam on the north side of the bridge
  • Work is anticipated to begin on Monday, December 6th and be complete by Wednesday, December 8th
  • The roadway will be reduced to a single lane and officers will assist with traffic control
  • A truck detour will be in place to direct trucks and buses away from the bridge during work hours (8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
  • Motorists should expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes
