Highway Division Updates
- Last week, the Highway Division:
- Installed curbing on Evergreen Road and backfilled with loam and grass seed
- Repaired potholes on Bedford Terrace, Cardinal Way, Deerfield Drive, Hampden Street and at the Hampton Avenue and Old South Street parking lots
- Patched sewer trench cuts on Crosby Street and West Street
- Removed graffiti from Center Street and West Street
- Swept Baker Hill Road, several streets in Leeds, and roads at Spring Grove Cemetery
- Street sweeping continues in Ward 4; the street sweeping schedule for 2021 by ward will be in the following order: 5, 4, 3, 2, 7, 1, 6
- To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed.
Atwood Drive
- The City has contracted with GEG Construction, Inc. for roadway reconstruction and water line replacement on Atwood Drive
- The project is substantially complete and pre-construction traffic patterns have resumed
- The contractor will continue working on signage and other minor site improvements in the following weeks
- Officers will assist with traffic control for the placement of driveway aprons or as necessary
Bridge Street, Damon Road, Interstate 91 - Exit 25 (old Exit 19)
- MassDOT has contracted with Baltazar Contractors, Inc. to construct a roundabout and associated improvements to the Interstate 91 - Exit 19 interchange at the base of the Coolidge Bridge
- The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2021
- Baltazar will be doing night paving Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am; detours will be in place.
- Monday, June 21st - Exit 25 (old Exit 19) on and off ramps will be closed with alternating traffic on Rte 9 westbound
- Tuesday, June 22nd - Damon Road will be closed with alternating traffic on Rte 9 eastbound
- Wednesday, June 23rd - Damon Road will be closed with alternating traffic on Rte 9 eastbound
- Baltazar will be marking permanent line layout on Thursday, June 24th and Friday, June 25th, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, with alternating lane closures on Rte 9 eastbound and westbound
- Motorists should expect traffic delays; officers will assist with traffic control

Damon Road Reconstruction
- MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with King Street, North King Street and Bridge Road
- The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
- The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2023
- Utility relocation, drainage improvements and water & sewer replacement will occur prior to full depth roadway reconstruction
- A bike path detour will be in place during the month of June. Bikes and pedestrians will use the new bike path connector behind the former Fish Hook restaurant, cross Damon Road near the new roundabout using the new RRFB signal, and use the sidewalk along DCR property to connect to the former RR bridge crossing the Connecticut River - Bike Path Detour Map (pdf)
- Gagliarducci will continue working on drainage and concrete headwalls on the eastern end of the project
- Travel will be restricted to a single lane as needed; officers will assist with traffic control

King Street Corridor Improvements
- MassDOT has contracted with Morais Concrete Service, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to King Street between Bright Street and Church Street
- The project will provide lane reconfiguration, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, landscaping and drainage improvements and new traffic signals at North & Summer Streets and Finn Street at both King and State Streets
- The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by Fall 2022
- Morais will be installing drainage structures and traffic control conduit between North and Finn Streets
- Two way traffic will be maintained but lane closures and shifts will be in effect; officers will assist with traffic control

Masonic Street Parking Lot & Amber Lane
- The City has contracted with Jack Goncalves & Sons, Inc. to remedy a failing sewer line which passes through both the Masonic Street parking lot and Amber Lane and serves multiple Main Street businesses and residents; the project will also upgrade the water main to allow for enhanced fire flows and future fire sprinkler connections
- Construction has begun and will be ongoing throughout the summer months; as of June 1st, the Masonic Street parking lot is closed to the general public
- The Contractor has installed a new water main in the Masonic Street parking lot with water main spur-lines to the alleyway behind buildings 219 to 241 Main Street; work to connect existing water services to the new water mains has begun and will continue this week; the installation of a new water main in Amber Lane is anticipated to occur in July
- The Contractor is planning to replace part of the sewer in Amber Lane in the next two weeks; the installation of the new sewer in the alleyway behind 219 to 241 Main Street is anticipated to occur in July/August (after completion of a proposed gas line relocation)
North Farms Road
- The City contracted with Palmer Paving Corp last year (2020) for pavement reclamation and drain improvements on North Farms Road and North Maple Street
- The contractor or their subcontractors may be on North Farms Road or at Fitzgerald Lake this week finishing up contracted work, such as laying porous asphalt on the Fitzgerald Lake path, installing a pavement patch near Country Way or working on various punch list items
Paving Contract 2021
- The City has contracted with Warner Brothers, LLC for roadway improvements on Hayes Avenue, Loudville Road, Meadow Street, Pine Street, and Warfield Place
- Improvements include pavement reclamation, drainage work, sidewalk and ADA upgrades, and pavement markings
- Work will also include intersection reconfiguration at Pine Street with Maple Street and Mann Terrace and bridge rehabilitation on Meadow Street over the Mill River
- The work is expected to continue through the end of the year
- Preliminary work such as installation of construction signage, erosion control, and tree protection is anticipated to begin in the upcoming weeks
