Drinking Water Week is celebrated annually across the country during the first week of May. Each day this week, we’ll share a post about ways that the Northampton Department of Public Works (DPW) ensures that residents have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water.

Wednesday, May 7th

Raw water from the City’s three reservoirs is gravity fed or pumped (depending on which reservoir it is drawn from) to a treatment plant in Williamsburg. The treatment plant removes naturally occurring particles and disinfects the water. This facility began operating in 2007 and treats over 2-3 million gallons of water each day. A dedicated staff of licensed professionals work around the clock to make sure that all water leaving the plant meets strict federal and state water quality standards. For more information on water quality see the 2024 Water Quality Report (pdf).
