[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of March 25th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Arch Street, Bridge Road, Country Way, Hatfield Street, Jackson Street, King Street, Massasoit Street, Morningside Drive, Parsons Street, Pine Street, Rustlewood Ridge & Turkey Hill Road and at JFK Middle School
    • Repaired gate at Glendale Road Transfer Station, Gate #2
    • Repaired, installed, replaced or removed signs on Elm Street, Harrison Avenue, Hinckley Street, Prospect Street, Redford Drive, Riverside Drive and West Street
  • Federal Street is reduced to one lane at the culvert crossing between Milton Street and Vernon Street until further notice
  • Lovefield Street remains closed until further notice
  • Annual ward street sweeping operations:
    • Will begin in the coming weeks
    • Wards will be swept in the following order this year: 6, 7, 4, 3, 2, 1, 5
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed
  • To report an issue with a traffic sign, please submit a request via the Traffic Sign Issue Form

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with Bridge Road, King Street and North King Street
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by July 2024
  • The Contractor has demobilized for the winter; work will resume in Spring 2024
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #608236

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to construct drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River; work also includes roadway drainage improvements
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Public Works will be on-site continuing post-construction observations throughout the spring

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • I-91 southbound:
    • Daytime right lane closure Monday through Friday this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for site access
  • I-91 northbound:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • Route 5:
    • No traffic impacts are anticipated this week
  • Hockanum Road:
    • Daytime road closure on Tuesday, March 26th this week, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for concrete work on bridge deck ; a detour (pdf) will be in place; a police detail will assist with traffic control

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve Installation

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The switch-over to the new system and pressures will occur in the coming weeks

Levee Vegetation Management

  • The City has contracted with Cain’s Mechanical LLC for vegetation management at various locations throughout the levee and flood control system on both the Connecticut and Mill Rivers
  • Work to mechanically remove unwanted woody growth and fallen trees and localized placement of rip rap for slope stabilization will be undertaken periodically system wide throughout the growing season
  • The Contractor has demobilized for the winter; work will resume in Spring 2024

Loudville Road

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to install a catch basin and drain pipe on Loudville Road in the vicinity of 81, 83 and 85 Loudville Road to address roadway drainage issues
  • Excavation work and drainage installations are complete
  • A partial road closure will be needed to install a pavement patch sometime in the coming weeks; a police detail will assist with traffic control

Massasoit Street Sewer Repair

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to repair a sewer main and a sewer service line in the vicinity of 123 Massasoit Street & 274 Prospect Street
  • Work is anticipated to begin in the coming weeks

Rocky Hill Road (Route 66)

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to repair a drain pipe near the Hampshire Jail & HOC; work also includes repairs to the east bound lane pavement, curbing and sidewalk
  • A partial road closure will be needed to conduct the work sometime in the coming weeks; a police detail will assist with traffic control

Sewer Lining

  • The City has contracted with National Water Main Cleaning Company for in situ lining of the sewer main on Cherry Street, Graves Avenue, Highland Avenue, Linden Street, Maplewood Terrace, Milton Street, Orchard Avenue, Ormond Drive, Union Street and Williams Street
  • The project includes cleaning and inspecting sewer lines followed by pipe lining utilizing a technique called ultraviolet-light cured in place pipe (UV-CIPP)
  • Brief disruptions to sewer service will occur during the process and notices will be handed out one (1) week in advance with a reminder notice 24 hours before any service impact

  • Sewer cleaning and inspecting work is complete
  • Liner installation is scheduled to begin in mid-April

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • The project is substantially complete
  • Public Works and/or the Contractor will be on-site continuing post-construction inspections throughout the spring
