Public Notice of Barrett Street Sewer Overflow - Resolved
NORTHAMPTON: This is a public notification from the City of Northampton Department of Public Works in accordance with 314CMR16.00, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Regulations for Sanitary Sewer Overflows. As a result of significant rainfall today, there was heavy inflow into the sewer system on Barrett St in Northampton, and the sewer became surcharged late this afternoon.
The sewer overflowed and discharged to Barrett Street Brook. The discharge consisted of waste not treated before release and is estimated at less than 500 gallons. The situation has since been resolved with bypass pumping. We urge the public to avoid the Barrett St Brook and downstream areas of the Connecticut River at the Connecticut River Greenway for 48 hours.
