[ARCHIVED] Construction for the Week of June 26th

Highway Division Updates

  • Last week, the Highway Division:
    • Repaired potholes on Blackberry Lane, Dana Street, Old Springfield Road, Old Wilson Road, Prospect Street and Ridgewood Terrace
    • Patched a curb on Hooker Avenue
    • Repaired driveway aprons on Nonotuck Street
    • Installed, repaired and/or replaced signs on Elm Street, Holyoke Street, North Elm Street, Spring Street and West Street
    • Repaired sidewalks on Crafts Avenue and Main Street
    • Replaced sidewalk pavers with asphalt on Crafts Avenue and Main Street
  • Annual ward street sweeping operations continue in Ward 5
    • Wards will be swept in the following order this year: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 7, 6
  • To report a pothole, please submit a request via the Pothole Repair Form; the largest potholes are filled first to alleviate hazards to vehicles; as hazards arise and are identified, they will be addressed

Bridge Street School Safe Routes to School

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gomes Construction Company, Inc. to complete improvements that will enhance pedestrian safety near Bridge Street School
  • The project will upgrade sidewalks, curbing and accessible ramps on Parsons Street and portions of Hawley Street; upgrade the pedestrian crossing on Bridge Street near Parsons Street including RRFBs; and reconstruct the intersection of Pomeroy Terrace with Bridge Street to install a raised crosswalk and to improve drainage
  • The project is scheduled to be complete in Summer 2023
  • The Contractor will be installing catch basins and drain manholes on Pomeroy Terrace at the intersection with Bridge Street
  • Pomeroy Terrace will be closed to through traffic between Bridge Street and Phillips Place during work hours; a detour will be in place via Hawley Street
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #609915

Damon Road Reconstruction

  • MassDOT has contracted with Gagliarducci Construction, Inc. to reconstruct Damon Road from the bike path to just beyond the intersection with Bridge Road, King Street and North King Street
  • The project will provide intersection and traffic signal improvements, extended sidewalks, a shared use path and other safety improvements
  • The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023
  • The Contractor will be installing new water main at the intersection of Damon Road and King Street
  • Motorists should expect delays with traffic shifts at the intersection
  • Questions about the project should be directed to MassDOT District 2, project #608236

Dryads Green Extension Drainage & Slope Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Geeleher Enterprises Inc. to construct drainage and slope improvements from the end of Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River; work also includes roadway drainage improvements in the vicinity of 49, 50, 55, 57 & 59 Dryads Green
  • Construction is anticipated to begin in late June and continue through the summer
  • The path from Dryads Green Extension to the Mill River remains closed until further notice; construction will also temporarily close the walking path along the Mill River

I-91 Bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road

  • MassDOT has contracted with J.F. White, Inc. to construct roadway improvements to I-91 and at Exit 23 (formerly Exit 18)
  • The project will replace the I-91 bridges over Route 5, the Railroad and Hockanum Road and construct safety and signal improvements at the exit interchange
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in phases by 2025
  • I-91 southbound, left lane closure Monday-Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; Tuesday lane closure shifts during the day from left to right for temporary paving
  • I-91 northbound, lane closures Sunday night 7:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • Route 5, no traffic impacts are anticipated this week; nighttime closure of Route 5 for demolition of southbound bridge is anticipated to begin in two weeks
  • Hockanum Road, no traffic impacts are anticipated this week

Leeds Pressure Reducing Valve

  • The City has contracted with GEG Construction for water system improvements that include an above grade pressure reducing valve (PRV) connected to the 36-inch transmission main in Haydenville Road across from Scotti’s
  • The project will allow for the eventual demolition of the Audubon Road water storage tank
  • The project is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2023
  • Final site work schedule for Summer 2023 TBD

Levee Toe Drain Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Ludlow Construction Co., Inc. for the installation of manholes along the land side of both the Connecticut and Mill River levee systems
  • The project involves the installation of 28 new manholes and inspection of the toe drains running parallel to the levees via CCTV
  • Manhole installations and pipe inspections via CCTV are complete
  • Pipe repair adjacent to Venturers Field Road schedule for Summer 2023 TBD

Levee Vegetation Management

  • The City has contracted with Cain’s Mechanical LLC for vegetation management at various locations throughout the levee and flood control system on both the Connecticut and Mill Rivers
  • Work to mechanically remove unwanted woody growth and fallen trees and localized placement of rip rap for slope stabilization will be undertaken periodically system wide throughout the growing season
  • The Contractor will continue removing woody vegetation along riprap slopes of the Mill River Diversion Channel this week

Locust Street & SVAHS Drainage Improvements

  • The City has contracted with Clayton D. Davenport Trucking, Inc. to construct a new outfall at Smith Voc to relieve capacity constraints in the Locust Street drainage system; work also includes the replacement of a failed drain manhole in Locust Street
  • Construction is anticipated to continue through the summer

Winter Street Reconstruction

  • The City has contracted with Caracas Construction Corporation for the full depth reconstruction of Winter Street, including water & sewer mains and service connections and sidewalks
  • Construction is scheduled to be complete by Fall 2023
  • The Contractor will not be working on site this week
  • The schedule for final paving of the roadway, driveways and sidewalks is TBD
