Renewable Energy Investments

The following investments have been made for increasing renewable energy within Northampton.

  • 106 kW solar array installed at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, which is earning the city money to support additional clean energy improvements in Northampton
  • 13 kW solar panels installed on James House Community Learning Center
  • 10 kW solar panels installed on JFK Middle School
  • 800 kW Landfill Gas-to-Electricity Project
  • City Council adopted as-of-right siting and an expedited application and permit process for designated renewable energy facilities
  • Downtown parking meters are powered by solar energy
  • Downtown trash collection is people-powered, not diesel powered
  • Geothermal heat pumps at the new Senior Center reduce energy use
  • Air-source heat pumps heat and cool the James House Community Learning Center
  • Coursework on renewable energy technologies at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School
  • Hundreds of residents and businesses have signed up for renewable energy through the GreenUp program, earning the city over $140,000 to spend on clean energy projects
