Community Swap Shop to open for its third season on April 8, 2017

The Northampton Community Swap Shop will open on April 8, 2017 and will be located  at the Glendale Road Transfer Station- 170 Glendale Road, Florence. The ReCenter will be open on Saturday mornings from 8am-11:30am through October 2017. Residents may access the swap shop with a current Northampton transfer station permit, or with the purchase of a $10 annual ReCenter season pass.  Permits are available for purchase at the DPW offices on Locust Street and both transfer stations.  ReCenter passes may be purchased at the DPW and the Glendale Road Transfer Station.

The goal of the ReCenter is to promote reuse by capturing useful items from Northampton’s waste stream, reducing the amount of useful goods shipped to landfills or incineration facilities.  During the 2016 season, 14 tons of material was reused or recycled as a result of ReCenter activity.  77% of the material accepted during the season was adopted for reuse by customers, 14% was transferred to reuse partners (EcoBuilding Bargains, Cancer Connection Thrift Shop, Salvation Army), and 5% was recycled.

Because of a zero cost/zero waste pledge to the City of Northampton, the volunteers who operate the swap shop can accept only those items which are highly popular or recyclable, are desired by regional reuse partners, or for which a disposal fee has been pre-paid.

The ReCenter opened in April 2014.  It is operated by the Department of Public Works’ ReUse Committee, with guidance and assistance from DPW employees.
