Florence Pop-Up

The City of Northampton received a small grant from AARP (fall 2019) to create a placemaking pop-up in Florence. The purpose was to engage residents and explore how Florence Center could be more pedestrian and age-friendly.  The ideas will inform future rezoning and streetscape improvements.

The work was coordinated by students from two classes, regional planning at the University of Massachusetts and landscape studies at Smith College, with the budget going for materials and to engage artists for the project.

Students put together two videos highlighting their work:

Florence Center placemaking popup- the full story video - a comprehensive look at the pop-up with interviews of the UMass and Smith College professors involved in the process and discussion about the project’s inspiration, undertaking, and implementation.

Florence Center placemaking popup sampling video - a short clip by UMass students showing the project and their takeaways
