About the Northampton Board of Health
The all-volunteer Northampton Board of Health is dedicated to working with the city government to improve health, health equity, well-being and the quality of life in Northampton. The mission of the Board is to protect residents, visitors and business owners from potential environmental and behavioral risks to the public’s health. The Board welcomes individuals with a passion for ensuring a culture of health within the city. Interested parties from all walks of life and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Five members serve on the Board. The term of service on the Board is three years, with members being appointed by the mayor and confirmed by city council. Appointments are made on a rolling basis, as members resign or retire from service. The Board holds a monthly public meeting that is open to all members of the community.
Serving on the Board of Health
To support an inclusive environment where Board members feel empowered to share their experiences and ideas, we encourage applicants who have diverse backgrounds of color, social class, economics, sexuality, culture, gender, education, and profession, including individuals who are veterans, LGTBQ, disabled, or identify as neurodiverse. All members must be residents of Northampton and at least 18 years of age. At least one member of the Board needs to be a physician.
The Northampton Board of Health has the authority to enact policy and legislation to protect and promote the health of the residents and visitors of Northampton. These powers are granted by the Massachusetts State Legislature.
The Board of Health works closely with the Director of the Northampton Health Department, who provides administrative control of daily operations and implements public health programs, including disease surveillance, health promotion, environmental health inspection, public outreach, education, and empowerment.
