Yard Waste

Disposal of Yard Waste has been modified due to the COVID-19 Outbreak. The Glendale Road collection sites are open to permit holders by appointment only.  The following information is effective immediately.  Please read it carefully as many procedures have changed. {last updated June 1, 2020} 

Yard and Leaf Waste Collection

Leaves, grass clippings, and brush are accepted at two sites within the Glendale Road Transfer Station (170 Glendale Road (map), Northampton, MA 01062).  The Glendale Road location follows the City’s inclement weather closure schedule, and will close on all holidays observed by the City of Northampton.  There is no disposal fee for leaf and yard waste, but material must meet the specifications provided below.   An annual transfer station sticker is required for access.  Please direct all questions to dpw@northamptonma.gov or phone 413-587-1570.

Leaf and Yard Waste Requirements

  • Leaves will be accepted loose or in brown paper leaf bags.
  • Plastic bags and tree stumps are not accepted.

Brush Requirements

  • Brush must be less than four feet in length and less than six inches in diameter, and must be kept separate from other yard wastes.

The Main Gate (by appointment only)

Small loads of leaves and grass clippings are accepted during normal operating hours at the "Main Gate" the primary Glendale Road transfer station site. No brush is accepted at this location.

  • Hours of operation: 7 AM - 11:45 AM the first and third Saturday morning of each month.
  • Request an appointment to bring material to the Glendale Road Main Gate area.

Gate 2 at Glendale Road (by appointment only)

This site is also accessed from Glendale Road, just 200 yards north of the Main Gate entrance.

Gate 2 is open seasonally (April through November) to accept large loads of yard waste, brush, and leaves.

  • Hours of operation: 7 AM - 3:45 AM the second and fourth Saturday of each month, April - November.  
  • Please note that all vehicles transporting large loads of material to Gate 2 are subject to the City’s Truck Load Covering Ordinance.
  • Request an appointment to bring material to the Glendale Road Gate 2 area.
